Cross country competes in season opener

The New Palestine cross country teams competed at Saturday's John Cleland Invitational at Northview Christian Church in Carmel. The event was split into freshman/sophomore and junior/senior 4K races, with the times combined for a combined score. The Dragons boys finished 13th of 19 teams in the combined race, tallying 419 places. Freshman Carson Cooper was 80th (13:57.9), freshman Mike Bauer 101st (14:10.8), senior Gavin Smith 106th (14:11.6), junior Sam Ragsdale 185th (14:56.1) and freshman Gabe Silvey 218th (15:13.0) out of 589 runners. Among juniors/seniors, the Dragons were 14th of 16 teams. Smith was 60th, Ragsdale 94th, David Gould 136th, Charlie Rigsbee 139th and Harrison Carr 160th. Among freshman/sophomores, the Dragons were 11th of 16 teams. Cooper was 34th, Bauer 44th, Silvey 111th, Ryan Cain 123rd and Zion Koch 153rd. In the combined girls scoring, the Dragons were 11th of 18 tems with 332 places.Junior Abby Journay led the Dragons with a 90th-place finish (17:21.7). Sophomore Addison Uhl was 104th (17:35.0), freshman Bri Journay 118th (17:45.3), sophomore Taylor Stone 138th (18:10.7) and freshman Avery Montani 152nd (18:24.8). Among juniors/seniors, the Dragons were ninth of 13. Abby Journay was 44th, Heidi Bloomer 68th, Taylor Burke 59th, McKenzie Hacker 87th and Marley Ragsdale 139th. The Dragons were eighth in the freshman/sophomore scoring in a 15-team field. Uhl was 55th, Bri Journay 66th, Stone 78th, Montani 85th and Olivia Weaver 97th. The Dragons are next in action Aug. 31 at the Mt. Vernon Invitational, which will double as the Hancock County meet.
