Hurst, Journay advance to State Finals

Junior Rylee Hurst and sophomore Abby Journay both earned spots at the IHSAA State Finals after advancing from Tuesday's Shelbyville regional. Hurst advances with a third-place finish in the 400, while Journay finished fourth in teh 200 but broke the state standard time. Journay will also advance in the high jump, where she finished second and maet the state standard. In the 400, Hurst ran 59.87 and was one of three runners below a minute. Journay ran 24.99 in the 200, placing fourth, but less than a half-second behind winner Ahniyanh Bennett of Connersville (24.53). She was one of five runners who beat the state standard to advance. In the high jump, Journay cleared 5-foot-4, finishing second to Warren Central's Kira Smith (5-8), but two inches better than the rest of the field. They will compete in the State Finals Friday, May 31 at the Indiana University Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington. As a team, the Dragons tallied 30 points and tied for seventh. Courtney Study placed fifth in the 1600. Her time of 5:11.09 was second-fastest in school history. The Dragons' 4x400 relay of Study, Taylor Burke, Hurst and Journay also finished fifth (4:06.28). Rebecca Johnson was sixth in the pole vault, tying for the second-best vault in school history (10-3). The 4x8000 relay of Margaret Barrett, Cami Massari, McKenzie Hacker and Taylor Stone placed 14th.
