Softball wins sectional opener

The No. 4 New Palestine softball team rolled to a 21-0 victory over Muncie Central in Tuesday's sectional opener at Pendleton Heights. The Dragons advance to face Pendleton Heights in Wednesday's 7:30 p.m. semifinal. PH beat Anderson 10-4 in Tuesday's second game. Cailyn Hurst and Sadey Hughbanks combined on a one-hit shutout in the five-inning contest. The Dragons had 18 hits, with each starter tallying at least one. Six were for extra bases. Maddie Engle was 2-for-2 with two runs, a homer and four RBI. Paige Ernstes was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and four RBI. Saydie Miller was also 2-for-2 with a double, a run and three RBI. Nyla Lewis was 2-for-2 with a doule, two runs and two RBI. Jersi Gross was 1-for-2 with three runs and an RBI. Ella Holman and Payton Dye were each 1-for-1 with an RBI. Kylee Beranek was 1-for-1 with three runs scored. Katie Hirschy was 1-for-1 with two runs scored. Kenna Tweedy also scored twice. Lauren Wagoner was 1-for-2 with a run. Catherine Trebley had a run and an RBI. Callie Cromwell was 1-for-1. The Dragons scored six runs in the first, added nine in the second and five in the third before plating one in the fourth. The Dragons enter tonight's contest with PH with a 20-5 record.
