Girls track advances to regional in eight events

Athletes from the New Palestine girls track and field team will advance to the regional in eight events after strong sectional performances. As a team, the Dragons finished fourth in the 11-team Warren Central sectional with 76 points. Warren Central (146) narrowly defeated Franklin Central (145.5) for the title. Greenfield-Central was third (91). The Dragons finished ahead of Roncalli (73), Lutheran (36.5) and five other teams. The top three finishers in each event advance to regional. Rebecca Johnson won the sectional title in the pole vault, clearing a 10-0 height. Rylee Hurst was the first to clinch a regional spot, as she finished third in the 100 (12.74). She also finished second in the 400 (1:00.67) to advance. Courtney Study also advanced with a third-place finish in the 1600 (5:15.99). Abby Journay also advanced with a third-place finish in the 200 (25.62) and a second-place tie in the high jump (5-2). The 4x400 relay team of Study, Taylor Burke, Hurst and Journay also finished third (4:05.87). The 4x800 relay team of Margaret Barrett, Cami Massari, Mackenzie Hacker and Study finished fourth, but will advance on time (10:24.19). Savannah Baird was fourth in pole vault. Alaina Doran was fifth and Maddy Brooks eighth in the 100 hurdles. Hurst was fifth in the long jump. Taylor Nash was seventh in the 300 hurdles. Cadyn Brown was seventh in the shot put and eighth in discus. Amelia Stone was seventh and Evelyn Kell eighth in the 3200.
