For the third consecutive Wednesday, the New Palestine girls soccer team found itself in a home shootout against a conference foe. The Dragons came out victorious, defeating Pendleton Heights 2-1, outscoring the Arabians 3-2 in the five-round penalty kick shootout. In the opening half, both teams battled back and forth with solid chances but the teams went to the intermission scoreless. With a few adjustments made at halftime, the Dragons came out and scored first to go up 1-0. Gabby Brown received a ball, took a great touch and passed to Tylar Whitaker who slammed the ball in the back of the net. The Arabians found the scoreboard when the Dragons defense got caught a little out of shape, tying the game at 1-1 and sending it to overtime, where the teams were unable to break the deadlock after 14 minutes. Whitaker, Mia Knoop and Brown all scored for the Dragons, while Grace Hasenkamp stopped three Arabians shooters, including an incredible diving stop in the third round to put the Dragons ahead in the shootout. The JV teams played to a scoreless draw. The Dragons are now 9-3-1 on the season and 5-1 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play. They finish league play Monday at Shelbyville, with a 5:30 p.m. JV kickoff, followed by the varsity at 7 p.m.
