Despite dominating possession and chances, the New Palestine boys soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Delta Saturday afternoon. The Dragons started on the front foot, as Elliott Canova and Brendan Tanksley both had chances in the box on feeds from Paxton Holmes, but one missed high and one was stopped by the Delta goalkeeper. The Eagles scored on a counterattack in the fourth minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Dragons continued to press, with Holmes drawing a foul just outside the box in the fifth minute. The ensuing free kick created chances in front but Delta was able to clear. In the 21st minute, Canova took a run from midfield, beat several Eagles and forced a diving save. Nine minutes later, Cohen Wintin took the ball on a break, drew the keeper out and took a shot. The keeper made the initial save, but the ball came back to Wintin with the keeper out. His second attempt was blocked and cleared. Delta scored off a corner kick in the 49th minute to take a 2-0 lead. The Dragons responded five minutes later, as Wintin sent a pass across the face of goal to Tristan Kean, who calmly finished it to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Dragons continued to pressure. Cody Crawmer took an attack that was deflected just wide in the 63rd minute. Twice, the Dragons attacked into the box and went down on contact, but play continued. Another chance came in the final two minutes as Tanksley fed Kean, but his shot was deflected just wide of the post. The Dragons are now 6-6 overall and 1-4 in HHC play. They next play Thursday at home against Greenwood. The Dragons and Delta played to a 0-0 draw in a 40-minute JV game.
