Baseball wins opener at Delta

The New Palestine baseball team pulled away in the late innings to beat Delta 10-3 Tuesday in the opener of their two-game series. The Dragons improved to 14-2 (7-2 HHC), with the rematch set for Wednesday at NPHS. Nic Deering, Jackson Kamp and Wyatt Mathies had three hits each, while Ben Hirschy drove in three runs for the Dragons. Michael Thorpe pitched a complete-game win, scattering seven hits and striking out six. The Dragons scored first, when Adam Rickey led off with a walk and scored. Delta answered with a run on three hits in the bottom of the frame, but a doubleplay with the bases loaded helped end the threat. The Dragons had a runner thrown out at home to end the second, but took a lead in the third. Morris and Kamp reached on one-out singles. Rigg Mahurin followed with an RBI double to right. Hirschy plated two more runs with a base hit to right to put NP up 4-1. The Dragons added to the lead in the fifth, as Deering led off with a single and scored on an RBI groundout by Mahurin. Delta scored twice on three hits in the sixth to cut the Dragons' lead to 5-3, but the Dragons pounced in the seventh to put the game away. Deering led off with a single, followed by a walk to Jacob Morris. Kamp drove in a run with a single. Mahurin followed with an infield hit to load the bases. Hirschy forced in a run with a walk. Jace Jaques' grounder scored another run. Mathies and Jesse Isaacs each had RBI hits to extend the lead. The Dragons had 15 hits in the contest. Deering was 3-for-4 with two runs. Kamp was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Mathies was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Mahurin was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Rickey was 1-for-3 with a run. Morris was 1-for-2 with two runs. Hirschy was 1-for-3 with three RBI. Isaacs was 1-for-1 with an RBI.
