The New Palestine girls soccer team rallied in the second half and then won in a shootout Wednesday to beat Greenfield-Central 2-1 in penalty kicks. The Dragons outscored the visiting Cougars 3-0 in the shootout, with Grace Hasenkamp keeping the Cougars out of the net, while Vivian Miller, Tylar Whitaker and Anna Luker all scored for the Dragons. In regulation, the Dragons controlled possession early but were unable to mount any offensive attack in the first half. Greenfield-Central struck early and held a 1-0 lead into halftime. After halftime, the Dragons again controlled possession and the ball for most of the second half, creating several offensive chances and drawing multiple fouls as the Cougars had a difficult time handling the Dragons' offense. Anna Luker made good on one of many free kick opportunities when she placed a beautiful kick in the upper 90 completely out of reach of the G-C keeper in the second half, tying the game at 1-1. For the fifth consecutive meeting over the last four seasons, the two teams went to overtime. In the 14-minute extra session, the Dragons maintained possession and were awarded several dangerous free kicks again. Luker's free kick with 4 minutes left hit off the crossbar and side bar and just went wide, setting up the shootout. The Dragons are now 7-2-1 on the season and 4-1 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play. They next play Saturday at Cathedral. The game will be played at the FC Pride Performance Center at 62nd Street/County Road 600N and Carroll Road, with a 4:30 p.m. JV kickoff. The Dragons won the JV game 2-0 behind goals from Kaylee Beckner and Addison Lindell. Jaeda Jeffries and Ava Schroer shared the clean sheet.
