Journay sets high jump record

Abby Journay broke a 16-year-old record Wednesday as the New Palestine girls track team competed against Monrovia. Journay broke the school high jump record, clearing the bar at 5-5, breaking a mark of 5-4.25 held by Amanda Wineman since 2008. The Dragons girls lost to Monrovia 83-40, while the boys beat Lawrence Central 68-55 at Kelso Stadium. Winners for the Dragons boys were Colton Spears in the 100 (11.5), leading a 1-2 finish with Eli Wasson. Jake Cooper (4:39.81) and Sam Ragsdale finished 1-2 in the 1600. Charlie Rigsbee (2:10.72) and Gavin Smith were 1-2 in the 800. Wasson (23.35) and Desmond Palmer took the top two spots in the 200. NP had another 1-2 finish in the 3200, with Jake Collins (11:33.03) and Hayden Flanagan. Spears won the high jump (6-2), Colby Burton the pole vault. The Dragons also won the 4x100 (44.08), 4x400 (3:28.98) and 4x800 relays (8:39.69). Also finishing second was Paxton Holmes in the 300 hurdles. Journay was a double-winner. In addition to her high jump victory, she also won the 200 (25.68). The Dragons also took the top three places in the 3200, with Amelia Stone winning (13:12.38), followed by Taylor Stone and Anne Bauer. Other winners for the Dragons girls were Rylee Hurst in the 400 (1:02.92), Courtney Study in the 800 (2:26.15), Placing second for the Dragons girls were Alaina Doran in the 100 hurdles, Rylee Hurst in the 100 and Lilly Madden in pole vault. The Dragons are back in action Thursday at Pendleton Heights.
