The New Palestine baseball team's six-game winning streak was snapped Thursday, as the Dragons fell behind early and dropped a 7-4 decision to visiting Mt. Vernon. The teams split their two-game series, with the road team winning each contest. NP won the opener 5-1 Tuesday at MV. The Marauders jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first on a two-run homer, then added three runs on four hits in the third to build a 5-0 edge. The Dragons clawed back in the bottom of the third, as Adam Rickey and Nic Deering reached base on a walk and hit batter. With two outs, Jackson Kamp hit a long double that one-hopped the leftfield fence, plating both runners and cutting the deficit to 5-2. MV again scored two runs in the fifth to extend its lead. In the sixth, the Dragons loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter. A run scored on an error, and another came home when Rickey was hit by a pitch. But MV starter Tristan Sitton was able to get out of the inning without further damage on a flyout to center, leaving the bases loaded. Jacob Morris led off the seventh with a triple, but was stranded as the Dragons were unable to complete the comeback. The Dragons were credited with two hits - Kamp's two-run double and Morris' triple. Henry Thorpe was the Dragons' starter, allowing seven runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out six. Rigg Mahurin fanned four and allowed one hit in 2 2/3 scoreless frames of relief. The Dragons are now 7-2 on the season and 4-2 in HHC play. They next play Friday at Beech Grove.
