Worth the wait: Softball slams way to Opening Day win

The New Palestine softball team waited three weeks to open its season. The Dragons then had to wait a while longer, as a first-inning rain delay affected the Dragons' opener against East Central. Once they got going, the Dragons dominated, routing the Trojans 20-0 in five innings. The Dragons scored nine runs in the second and 11 in the third. Sadey Hughbanks and Cailyn Hurst combined on a two-hit shutout, as each allowed one hit. Paige Ernstes homered, scored three times and drove in three to help lead a 15-hit Dragons attack. She was one of four Dragons witih multiple hits in the game. Sydney Oliver was 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs and three RBI. Maddie Engle was also 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and three RBI. Kylee Beranek was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and an RBI. In addition, Allie Blum was 1-for-2 with three runs and an RBI. Nyla Lewis was 1-for-1 with a run, a double and an RBI. Reese Rosenbaum was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Saydie Miller was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Katie Hirschy also drove in a run and scored once. The Dragons are next in action Wednesday at home against Franklin Central.
