Baseball bests Batesville

The New Palestine baseball team's bats came out hot and led to a 7-3 victory Saturday over visiting Batesville. The victory gave the Dragons a 2-1 record through the first week of the season. The Dragons scored six run in the opening two innings and never looked back in the victory, with Jackson Kamp and Adam Rickey leading a nine-hit attack with two hits each. Rickey scored twice, while Kamp drove in three uns. Jacob Morris, Gavin Neal, Rigg Mahurin, Michael Thorpe and Jace Jaques each also delivered hits for the Dragons, while Ben Hirschy drove in two runs. The Dragons took a quick 2-0 lead, when Rickey doubled and Nic Deering walked. Hirschy drove in one run wth a sacrifice fly, while Deering came home on a passed ball. NP extended it to 6-0 in the second, Jesse Isaacs and Rickey each drew walks. Morris followed with a single to load the bases. Deering was hit by a pitch to drive in a run. Hirshy followed with his second sacrifice fly of the game, and Kamp drove in two more with a single. Batesville scored twice in the third and hit a solo homer in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-3, but the Dragons added another run. Deering was hit by a pitch and scored on Kamp's double in the sixth. Hirschy earned the win in relief, pitching four innings and allowing two hits, one earned run and striking out five. Morris was the starter, allowing two runs, two hits and striking out three in three innings. The Dragons are next in action Tuesday at Yorktown.
