Rigg Mahurin and Henry Thorpe threw an outstanding game Friday, but the New Palestine baseball team dropped a tight 1-0 decision at Shelbyville. The teams split their two-game series, with each team winning at home. The Dragons are now 1-1 on the season, both overall and in the conference. The lone run of the game came in the second inning, when Shelbyville's Kohen Myers had a one-out single, moved into scoring position on a hit batter and a fielder's choice, then scored on a wild pitch. Mahurin and Thorpe held the Golden Bears to three total hits. Mahurin allowed two and struck out five over three innings. Thorpe then pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and fanning five. Shelbyville's Gavyn Fisher threw a three-hit shutout, striking out nine and walking none. The Dragons' three hits came on a one-out single by Jacob Morris in the first, a two-out hit by Adam Rickey in the fifth and a leadoff hit by Nic Deering in the seventh. The Dragons did not advance a runner past first base. The Dragons are back in action at noon Saturday at home against Batesville.
