The New Palestine girls soccer team battled for 94 minutes Wednesday, but came up just short in penalty kicks, falling to Mt. Vernon 2-1 in a shootout. The first half saw an even battle with each team having several great opportunities on goal, but the two teams went into the break scoreless. In the second half, the Dragons battled through some very physical play from the Marauders and were able to put the first score on the board when Neveah Gebhart scored her fifth goal of the season. The Dragons battled for the rest of the half and didn't allow the Marauders any good scoring opportunities. With less than five minutes left, the Dragons were whistled for a foul right outside the box. The Marauders capitalized and buried the shot. After a 14 minute overtime, neither team could score to end the game. The Dragons were outscored 4-3 in the penalty kick shootout. Mia Knoop, Tylar Whitaker and Gabrielle Brown scored on their penalty kicks for the Dragons. Goalkeeper Grace Hasenkamp won the team's hard hat award for her stellar play. The Dragons are now 6-2-1 on the season and 3-1 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play. They next play Wednesday, Sept. 14 at home against Greenfield-Central. The Dragons JV won 2-0, with Mackenzie Hacker and Addison Lindell scoring the two goals. Ava Schroer and Jaeda Jeffries shared the clean sheet.
