Haynes hits seven triples in boys basketball victory

Junior Moses Haynes hit seven 3-pointers and scored a career-high 24 points Friday, leading the New Palestine boys basketball team to a 70-52 victory over host Greenwood. The Dragons' victory gives them a 19-5 regular-season record, tying for the third-most wins in school history. The Dragons also won the 50th meeting between the schools and NP has now won 17 of the last 19 meetings and 30 overall. The Dragons seized control in the second quarter. Trailing 20-17, the Dragons finished the half on a 13-point run to take a 30-20 lead into the break. Alex Guhl hit a shot to launch the run, followed by a basket from Haynes and a three-point play by Evan Darrah. Julius Gizzi followed with a hoop, Brady Armstrong a 3-pointer and Haynes finished the half with a free throw. The Dragons then broke the game open in the third, outscoring Greenwood 26-14 to take a 56-34 lead going into the final frame. Austin McMahan and Guhl began the second half with baskets, then Haynes got hot, hitting four 3-pointers and scoring 12 points in the frame. Gizzi added six points, while McMahal scored a pair of baskets. The Dragons stretched the lead in the fourth, getting an early 3-pointer from Haynes and two free throws each from Keagan Harrison and Gizzi before coach Trent Whitaker brought in the bench for the latter part of the quarter. In the opening frame, the teams played a back-and-forth game. Gizzi scored eight points and McMahan four to give NP a 14-12 lead after one. Jake Mosemann had six early points for Greenwood in the game. Greenwood began the second with an 8-3 spurt - with Haynes' second 3-pointer of the game the Dragons' points - before the late-quarter run that put the Dragons in control. In addition to Haynes' 24 points, Gizzi scored 17. McMahan added eight points. Guhl and Armstrong each tallied five points. Harrison and Rigg Mahurin scored four each. Darrah tallied three. Isaac O'Neal led Greenwood with 18 points, scoring 14 in the fourth quarter - including four 3-pointers. Mosemann added 17 points. They were the only two Woodmen to tally more than five. The Dragons open sectional play Tuesday at Greenfield-Central against Mt. Vernon. The Dragons are defending sectional champions.
