Girls wrestling advances seven to semistate

The New Palestine girls wrestling team advanced seven of its 11 wrestlers from Saturday's Perry Meridian regional, witih two champions and five wrestlers advancing to the finals. Ezra Wagner won the title at 130, while June Wagner-Gilbert won at 135. Sydney DeLois (125), Madisyn Covington (140) and Ella Morris (145) all placed second. Jillian Champ finished third at 135 and Elizabeth Champ fourth at 145. All seven will compete at next week's Muncie Central semistate. At 130, Wagner won with three falls, including an 81-second pin of Beech Grove's Jaydyn Madry. She is 26-5 on the season. Wagner-Gilbert (32-2) also won with three falls at 135, with a 3:35 pin of Beech Grove's Holly Garrett in the championship match. DeLois (18-2) was runner-up at 125, advancing to the final with two falls before a tight 4-2 loss to undefeated Southport wrestler K'yla Johnson in the title match. At 140, Covington (11-7) had two first-minute falls before a 6-1 loss by decision in the title match. At 145, Morris (30-6) won a forfeit and a first-period fall before a 6-3 loss in the title match. Jillian Champ moved to 19-9 at 135 with a 4-1 day, with all four wins coming by fall. Elizabeth Champ is now 17-9 after going 2-2 at 145. Also placing was Julia Champ at 155, who finished sixth. She was 3-3 on the day.
