Wrestlers finish 2nd at Spartan Classic

The New Palestine boys wrestling team finished second at the 32-team Spartan Classic at Connersville. The Dragons scored 222 points, finishing runner-up to Greenfield-Central (266). The Dragons edged out East Noble (221), Fishers (193.5) and Chatard (183.5), who also finished in the top five. The Dragons had 10 Top-8 placers in each 32-wrestler bracket, with three advancing to the finals. Shaun Glass was the individual champion at 215. He advanced to the finals with five consecutive falls - all in the first period. He then defeated Jasper's Tyson Ruhe with a 9-1 major decision in the final. At 190, Colin Whetsel finished second. He won with four falls to advance to the championship match and went 4-1 over the two-day tournament. Gunner Butt also finished second at 126. He had a fall and three decisions to advance to the final, and fell 4-3 in overtime in the championship match. At 144, Bryce Doss finished third. He lost his semifinal match, but rallied to win in the wrestlebacks by tech fall and then a 1-0 decision over Providence Cristo Rey's Delin Jones in the third-place match, going 5-1 over the two days. Peyton Hornsby also finished third at 138. After winning three falls in the first three rounds, he dropped a tough 14-13 decision in the semifinal. Hornsby then won 11-4 in the wrestlebacks and beat G-C's Jarred Harlow 8-4 in the third-place match. Blake Doss finished fourth at 106, going 5-2 over the weekend. Jaedyn Jeffries also went 5-2 to finish fourth at 157. Cole Vandygriff was fifth at 132, as was Gabe Flick at 165. Ryder Gardner was eighth at 126. The Dragons are next in action Thursday with a home dual meet against Franklin Central.
