The New Palestine boys soccer team played a strong match Saturday at Lawrence Central, but conceded a disputed goal in the 69th minute, which turned out to be the only tally in a 1-0 loss to the Bears. The Bears were able to win a free ball in the box and then played it forward to a player standing at the post, who tapped it in. The Dragons immediately argued for the play to be ruled offside, but it was not given and the goal allowed to stand. The Dragons nearly had the equalizer in the 77th minute, as Elliott Canova dribbled along the end line and sent a cross to the far post. It richocheted off a Bears defender and just missed wide. Goalkeeper Blake Bobrow had a strong game facing significant pressure. He made a pair of first-half saves on dangerous balls in front. In the second half, he made a kick save in the 53rd minute when the Bears had a free attacker from the 18, then made another save four minutes later on a touch from the six-yard box. He made two lunging saves in the final 10 minutes, one on a clean shot from near the penalty spot, to preserve the one-goal deficit and give the Dragons a chance to equalize. Canova had the Dragons' best chance of the early going, a shot from the corner of the box that went just wide. In the final minute of the half, Andon Colclazier fed Lennon Pottle at the six-yard box with a free kick. Pottle's header was on frame, but smothered by the Lawrence Central goalkeeper. LC's keeper made another save on Danny Davis from 12 yards out off a corner in the 43rd minute. Another strong chance came in the 54th minute, when Cohen Wintin dribbled the end line, and fought off a push to feed Cody Crawmer on the far side, but the attempt went wide. Five minutes later, Canova sprung Davis to the 18 on a counterattack, but the one-touch shot was parried out by the LC keeper. The Dragons are now 4-2 on the season. They resume conference play Tuesday at home against Mt. Vernon, with a 5:30 p.m. JV kickoff.
