Girls basketball drops thriller at Whiteland

In a game with multiple lead changes and a down-to-the-wire finish, the New Palestine girls basketball team dropped a 59-58 decision Saturday at Whiteland. Vivian Miller hit a late 3-pointer to draw the Dragons within one and NP had a chance to win on the final possession, but Whiteland was able to force a miss. Miller scored her career high with 21 points in the contest, tallying 19 in the second half. The Dragons jumped out to a 12-7 lead after a quarter, with Kendra Moore scoring five points in the opening frame. Whiteland then outscored the Dragons 22-13 in the second quarter to take a four-point lead at the half. Sadey Hughbanks tallied six points in the quarter for the Dragons. In the third, the Dragons re-took the lead, as Miller hit an early 3-pointer and scored 12 points in the frame, Allie Blum added eight - incliuding a triple later in the period - to give the Dragons a 45-43 lead going into the fourth. The Warriors hit three early 3-pointers in the fourth to take a lead, but the Dragons answered with two quick baskets by Miller and a 3-pointer by Blum. Kylee Beranek added three points and Miller a late three. In addition to Miller's 24 points, Blum added 15, Beranek nine, Hughbanks eight and Moore five. The Dragons (2-5) are next in action Tuesday at New Castle.
