Girls wrestling has three champs at Purdue Poly

The New Palestine girls wrestling team had two individual champions and finished second at Saturday's 40-team Purdue Poly Invitational at Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis. The Dragons tallied 174 points, finishing second to Franklin Central (288). Beech Grove (151), Warren Central (148) and Southport (142) also finished in the top five. June Wagner-Gilbert won the title at 135 pounds, while Ella Morris won at 155. Wagner-Gilbert won her bracket with two falls, a 14-0 major decision and a 7-3 decision. In the championship match, she beat Tri-Central's Makayela Philapy 9-6. Morris had two falls, a 16-3 major decision and a 16-10 decision to win her bracket. In the championship match, she pinned Franklin Central's Claire Bennett in 4:23. At 125, Sydney DeLois finished second, going 3-1 on the day with two falls. Finishing second in their respective brackets and tied for third overall were Ezra Wagner at 130 and Jillian Champ at 135. Samantha Neidlinger finished fourth at 100. Carmie Kelle was fourth in her bracket at 135. Elizabeth Champ was fifth in her bracket at 155. Julia Champ finished sixth in her bracket at 170. The Dragons are next in action Nov. 18 at the Ben Davis Invitational.
