The New Palestine football team found itself in a defensive slugfest, but surrendered a touchdown before halftime and then saw Roncalli take advantage of two short fields in the second half to beat the Dragons 20-6 Friday at Roncalli. The Dragons moved to 5-2 on the season and saw a four-game winning streak snapped as they faced their fifth Top 10 team of the year. The game was a defensive struggle throughout - the Dragons held Roncalli to 215 total yards, but were held to 177. In the first half, neither team had much offensive success. The Dragons had an early opportunity when Xavier Harmon recovered a fumble at the Royals' 39 on Roncalli's first drive of the game, but NP went four-and-out and was unable to take advantage. The Dragons gained one first down on each of their next three possessions, but were unable to drive inside the Roncalli 40. The Royals similarly struggled to move the ball against a stout Dragon defense, as four straight drives ended in punts outside the Dragons' 40. But late in the half, after forcing a Roncalli punt, the Dragons muffed a punt. Roncalli took advantage of the bonus possession, driving to the Dragons' 4 yard line in four plays. The Red Rage bowed up, and forced third-and-goal in the closing seconds of the half, but the Royals completed a pass for a touchdown with eight seconds remaining before halftime to take a 7-0 lead. In the second half, the Dragons' defense forced a punt and a turnover on downs on Roncalli's first two drives, but the Dragons went three-and-out twice. After the second punt, Roncalli took over at the NP 42 after a 28-yard punt return and scored in six plays to go up 14-0. The Dragons were stuffed on fourth-and-1 at midfield, and Roncalli again took advantage with a 12-play, 51-yard drive, which was extended by a fourth-down penalty when it appeared the Dragons had stopped Roncalli, to go up 20-0. On the final drive of the game, Rhys Ragan completed a 38-yard pass to Cael Butler to set the DRagons up in plus territory. An 11-yard pass to Ryder Gardner and a 12-yard pass to Mason Oglesby moved the ball inside the Roncalli 10. On the game's final play, Ragan hit Butler for a 4-yard TD to get the Dragons on the board. Butler had 42 yards receiving to lead the Dragons in that category. Ragan threw for 97 yards, while Logan Parks led the rushing attack with 46 yards. The Dragons next play Oct, 9 at Kelso Stadium against nationally-ranked IMG Academy of Bradenton, Florida.
