The New Palestine boys soccer team used a quick first-half flurry Thursday to take command en route to a 5-0 home victory over Shelbyville. The victory gave the Dragons (6-8) their fifth straight win, and their biggest victory of the year. After a back-and-forth first half, the Dragons broke through in the 30th minute, when Zach Holmes brought the ball up the right side and crossed the ball into the goalmouth, where Tyler Patterson redirected it into the net to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, Max Pottle scored from the left side of the box to extend the lead to 2-0. In the second half, the Dragons added to their lead, as Holmes drew a foul in the box and converted the penalty in the 47th minute. In the 62nd minute, Nathan Green scored on a far-post shot to push the edge to 4-0. In the 78th minute, Jacob Walker fired a shot from the top of the box that hit the goalpost, but richocheted to Hudson Hughes on the far side, who buried the fifth goal. Camden Brown and Colt Pratt shared the clean sheet in goal. The Dragons JV won 9-0. Levi Buck scored three goals. Elliott Hillebrand tallied two. Landon Wildman, Joseph Pena, Andrew Wooton and Bodey Brizendine also scored for the Dragons. The Dragons are next in action for Senior Night Tuesday at home against Franklin. The varsity kickoff will be at 6 p.m., followed by a JV half.
