Wagner-Gilbert leads girls wrestling in NP Invite

June Wagner-Gilbert won the 135-pound championship Saturday, leading the New Palestine girls wrestling team to a ninth-place finish at the New Palestine Invitational. Wagner-Gilbert won with three falls - beating Purdue Poly's Maizie Queen in 2:34, Noblesville's Brooke Butler in 1:45 and her NPHS teammate Jillian Champ in 35 seconds. In the championship match, she won a 10-2 major decision over Clinton Prairie's Shelby Luper. Champ finished fourth overall at 135 after finishing second in her half of the draw. Also placing for the Dragons was Julia Champ, who was third at 170. Madisyn Covington was fourth at 140. At 155, Elizabeth Champ was fourth and Ella Morris sixth. Carmie Kelle was third in her half of the bracket at 135. Olivia Lemus was sixth in her bracket at 125, as was Ezra Wagner at 130. The Dragons' 95 points placed them ninth out of 27 teams. Franklin Central won with 172.5, followed by Jay County (144) and Warren Central (111). The Dragons are next in action Wednesday with a dual meet at Beech Grove.
