Trailing by two goals late in the game despite carrying much of the play and out-chancing their hosts, the New Palestine boys soccer team needed a spark. They got it - incredibly, from a disallowed goal. But the Dragons bottled that energy and used it in a 3-2 come-from-behind victory at Whiteland. Trailing 2-0, the Dragons appeared to have scored on a long free kick in the 64th minute, but a player was ruled for being in the goalkeeper's line of vision while in an offside position, causing the goal to be disallowed. But the Dragons kept pushing. Three minutes later, Elliott Canova took a free kick from almost the same spot. Again, the 25-yard shot beat the Whiteland goalkeeper, but this one counted to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 67th minute. Three minutes later, Brendan Tanksley won a ball in the corner, leading to a cross that was batted down by a hand in the area, earning a penalty for the Dragons. Canova again calmly scored to tie the game. In the 77th minute, the Dragons were pressing again, winning a corner kick. Cohen Wintin gained possession and dribbled along the end line. He then sent a pass toward the penalty spot. A player at the spot dummied it back to Andon Colclazier, who stepped into a shot and rocketed it into the net to push the lead to 3-2. Blake Bobrow had to make a diving save in the 80th minute to keep the Dragons ahead and preserve the win. Whiteland scored quickly, with a near-post corner kick redirected into the Dragons' net in the second minute. Whiteland extended its lead in the 55th minute with a penalty kick to go up 2-0, but the Dragons held the majority of the chances in the counterattack. The Dragons' JV won 2-0 behind goals from Kendall Steele and Joey Hicks. The Dragons are now 3-1 on the season. They next play Thursday at Franklin Central.
