Abby Journay finished her decorated high school career by breaking one of New Palestine's oldest school records and earning herself a State Finals medal. The New Palestine senior finished sixth in the long jump at Friday's IHSAA girls track and field State Finals. She jumped 18-9.75 on her fifth of six attempts, breaking a mark held by Vanita Arnett for 50 years. The state champion, Elnora Stephenson of Whiteland, cleared 19-7.25. Journay also competed in the 200, where she finished 18th in 25.62 seconds. She was 0.37 seconds shy of qualifying for the finals. Also competing for the Dragons was Hailey Pardieck in the 3200. She finished 15th in 10:59.01. The state champion, Fort Wayne Concordia's Mallory Weller, posted a time of 10:18.66. Carmel won the state title with 49.5 points, finishing ahead of Bloomington South (35) and Whiteland (33). The four points scored by Journay's sixth-place finish placed the Dragons in a 50th-place tie out of 71 teams who scored at the State Finals.
