Softball routs Delta on Senior Night

The New Palestine softball team routed Delta 13-0 in five innings on a wet Senior Night at NPHS. The Dragons honored their seniors before the game, and then jumped ahead 4-0 in the first and never looked back. Cailyn Hurst pitched four shutout innings, allowing one hit and two total baserunners, to earn the win. She struck out six. Sadey Hughbanks pitched to one batter in the fifth - and recorded a strikeout - before yielding to Ava Lapenta, who retired the last two batters with one strikeout. The Dragons had eight hits and also drew nine walks and two hit batters. Lyndsay Goodin was 2-for-2 with a double and four RBI. Callie Cromwell was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs and three RBI. Payton Dye was 1-for-4 with a run. Saydie Miller was 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Claire Fitzgerald was 1-for-1 with a double, three runs and an RBI. The Dragons jumped ahead 4-0 in the first, loading the bases with one out on two walks and an error. Cromwell and Goodin then both hit two-run doubles. In the second, Miller and Fitzgerald started a five-run rally with back-to-back doubles. Cromwell then plated Fitzgerald with an RBI single. Goodin was hit by a pitch and Kenna Tweedy walked. All three runs came home via passed ball to extend the lead to 9-0. NP scored another four runs in the third. Morgan Hutchinson led off with a walk, then stole two bases and scored on a passed ball. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out. Hughbanks drove in a run with a groundout and Goodin followed with a two-run single. The Dragons finished the regular season with an 18-7 record and finished second in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 5-2 record. They open sectional play at noon Monday at Indian Creek against the host school.
