Girls track wins conference title by razor-thin margin

The New Palestine girls track and field team won the Hoosier Heritage Conference title in a wild and close meet, winning the title by a half-point. The Dragons emerged from a field in which four teams finished within two points of each other in a chase for the conference title. The Dragons tallied 100 points, with Mt. Vernon scoring 99.5, Pendleton Heights 99 and Delta 98. Greenfield-Central (73.5), Yorktown (73), Shelbyville (59) and New Castle (21) rounded out the scoring. The Dragons sealed the title with a third-place finish in the meet-ending 4x400 relay, as Bre Journay, Olivia Weaver, McKenzie Hacker and Abby Journay finished in 4:09.02, one second ahead of fourth-place Delta to secure the needed point to clinch the title. Abby Journay had a big meet, as she won the high jump (5-1), long jump (18-0) and finished second in the 200 (25.81), scoring 28 individual points. Cadyn Brown was also a conference champion in the discus (118-9), with Cara Foster eighth (95-1). Hailey Pardieck was second in both the 800 (2:21.90) and 1600 (5:07.07). Lillie Abernathy was second in shot put (35-6.5) and Cadyn Brown fourth (33-8). In the 3200, Adi Smith was third (11:47.92) and Elena Daugherty fifth (11:56.94). Savannah Baird was fifth in the pole vault (9-6). Caylee Brown was eighth in the 100 hurdles (17.34). Daugherty, Smith, Weaver and Pardieck were third in the 4x800 (10:22.90). Cayanna Brown, Caylee Brown, Marly Turso and Addison Lindell were fifth in the 4x100 (52.04). The Dragons next compete in the May 19 sectional at Greenfield-Central.
