Hedges, Morris lead baseball to sweep of Greenfield-Central

Jacob Morris and Kingston Hedges had three hits each and Morris threw 5 2/3 strong innings on the mound, leading the New Palestine baseball team to a 6-2 road victory Wednesday over Greenfield-Central. The victory gave the Dragons their first conference sweep of the year. and improved their Hoosier Heritage Conference mark to 4-3. It came on the heels of a 4-2 win in Tuesday's opener. Hedges was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and two RBI. Morris was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI, leading a 12-hit Dragons attack. Gavin Neal was 2-for-4 with a run from the leadoff spot. Marshall Giant was 2-for-4. Liam Atkinson was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Eli Whiteside also had a hit and a run. Morris struck out seven and scattered six hits over 5 2/3 innings. He did not allow an earned run. Neal pitched the final four outs - pitching around two hits and a walk with two strikeouts - to nail down his second save in as many days. The teams were scoreless heading into the thir. Neal and Morris had back-to-back one-out singles. Hedges' line-drive double to right plated a run, and Morris then came home on Atkinson's RBI groundout. G-C tied the game in the bottom of the inning on two singles and two errors, but the tie was short-lived. Haydon Mills reached on an error. Whiteside followed with a single to right. The Cougars tried to cut Mills down advancing to third, but an errant throw allowed the run to score. Morris followed with an RBI single up the middle to plate Whiteside and put the Dragons up 4-2. Hedges added an RBI double and Atkinson a run-scoring single to add two more runs. G-C threatened in the fifth, but Morris pitched around a two-out single and walk. In the sixth, Morris retired the first two batters, but a two-out single kept the Cougars alive. Neal came on in relief and allowed another single, but induced a poput to end the inning. In the seventh, Neal struck out the first wo batters, then after a walk and a single, he induced a popout to end the game. The Dragons improved to 9-5 overall with the victory. They are next in action Friday at Victory Field against Shelbyville.
