The New Palestine boys soccer team carried the play for much of the game's 94 minutes, but dropped a 2-1 decision in a shootout to Yorktown. The visiting Tigers won the PK shootout 5-3, converting on all five of their attempts. The Dragons scored on three of their four, with Elliott Canova, Lennon Pottle and Andon Colclazier converting. The Dragons started the game on the front foot, with Canova's free kick finding Cohen Wintin and Pottle in front, bugt a Yorktown defender stopped the first shot from in tight and the Tigers' goalkeeper made a diving save on the second. Shortly after Yorktown's keeper made a leaping parry of Wintin's shot from the top of the box, Yorktown drew a corner kick off the counter and converted it to take a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. It took three minutes for the Dragons to respond. Canova dribbled to the end line, turned on a defender and laid a deft pass across to Cole Christopher, who blasted one into the top of the net for the equalizer in the 24th minute. The Dragons continued to threaten, but left wanting for the go-ahead goal. Christopher hit the crossbar from 22 yards in the 51st minute. Paxton Holmes had two excellent chances 10 minutes later. Canova was stopped twice by fingertip saves 1v1 in the final 11 minutes of regulation. The Dragons' best chance came with four minutes to go in overtime, as Holmes set up Canova at the far post, but his shot went just wide. The Dragons are now 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play. They next play Saturday at Warren Central, with the JV game slated for 10 a.m., followed by the varsity at 11:45 a.m. The Dragons' JV won 3-0 in a 40-minute game. Mekhi McFarland scored twice and Dylan Milburn added a goal. Brady Schwedler and Grant Wildman had assists.
