Sadey Hughbanks pitched a complete-game victory and Cara Steele hit a two-run single to break a tie and give the New Palestine softball team a 3-1 home victory over Westfield Monday evening. Hugnbanks scattered six hits and struck out 10 in a complete-game victory. She allowed one run and walked two. She pitched around traffic early, as Westfield had a leadoff single in the first and a pair of two-out hits in the second, but was unable to score. The Dragons took the lead in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Kenna Tweedy walked and moved to third on Hughbanks' single. She scored on the front half of a double-steal. Westfield tied the game in the third on back-to-back two-out hits. But the Dragons re-took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Singles by Morgan Hutchinson, Saydie Miller and Amber Hurt loaded the bases. Steele then delivered a one-out, two-run single up the middle to put the Dragons up 3-1. It would be all the offense the Dragons would need. Hughbanks again pitched around a leadoff walk in the fourth and a leadoff single and walk in the sixth. She set the Shamrocks down in order in the seventh to finish the game. The Dragons threatened in both the fifth and sixth - putting two runners on base in each inning - but were unable to score. The Dragons tallied eight hits. Hurt was 2-for-3. Hutchinson was 1-for-4 with a run. Payton Dye was 1-for-3. Miller was 1-for-3 with a run. Steele was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Hughbanks was 1-for-2 and Lyndsay Goodin 1-for-3. The Dragons are now 7-2 on the season after their second straight win. They next play Tuesday at Yorktown to open conference play.
