Softball blanked by Carmel

The New Palestine softball team suffered a two-hit shutout Friday, as the Dragons were blanked 7-0 at Carmel. The Dragons fell to 5-2 on the season after their second consecutive shutout loss. NP had two hits - a leadoff double by Claire Fitzgerald in the third and a one-out double by Cara Steele in the seventh - and three baserunners in the game. Carmel used three hits and a two-run homer to take a 3-0 lead in the first. Another solo homer extended the Greyhounds lead in the second. Three more runs came home in the third on two singles, a passed ball and a two-run homer. The Dragons used three pitchers. Ava Lapenta started the game and allowed four hits and four earned runs over 1 1/3 innings. She recorded all four outs via strikeout. Sadey Hughbanks allowed four hits and three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief, also striking out four. Cailyn Hurst pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, fanning five and allowing one hit and no runs. The Dragons struck out 13 Greyhounds. The Dragons play their fifth game in five days Saturday at East Central.
