Journay sets record in girls track victory

Abby Journay set the school record in the long jump, leading the New Palestine girls track and field team to a triangular meet victory over Greenwood and Perry Meridian Thursday at Kelso Stadium. The Dragons tallied 105 points to best Greenwood (59) and Perry Meridian (3). The Dragons boys finished second by one point to Greenwood 76-75. Perry Meridian had 15. Journay cleared 17-10.5 in the long jump to break the school record. She led a 1-2-3 finish in the event with Marly Turo and Lauren Purkey. Journay also won the 200 (26.22), leading a 1-2 finish with Addison Lindell. She also won the high jump (5-3) and teamed with Bre Journay, Burke and Cayanna Brown to win the 4x400 (4:25.10). Other winners for the Dragons girls were Taylor Burke in the 100 hurdles (16.32), Adi Smith in the 1600 (5:42.18) and 3200 (12:13.82), Bre Journay in the 400 (1:06.10), Cadyn Brown in the shot put (32-11.5), Savannah Baird in pole vault (9-0) and the 4x100 relay of Cayanna Brown, Caylee Brown, Marly Turso and Addison Lindell (52.78). Individuals finishing second were Cayanna Brown in the 100, Lauren Purkey in the 400, Burke in the 300 hurdles, Olivia Weaver in the 800, Lillie Abernathy in the shot put and Cadyn Brown in discus. Winners for the Dragons boys were Paxton Holmes in the 110 hurdles (15.72), 300 hurdles (40.54) and long jump (20-8), Carson Cooper in the 1600 (4:40.49) and 3200 (10:33.05), Aiden Dillon in the high jump (5-6), the 4x800 relay of Ethan Kihiu, Nick Holland, J.T. Koch and Zion Koch (8:49.40) and the 4x100 relay of Holmes, Will Bardonner, Tyler Graves and Bryce Neuner (44.47). Individuals finishing second were Bardonner in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, Neuner in the 100 and 200 and Micah Flint in the 3200. The Dragons distance runners compete in the Franklin Central distance showcase Friday evening. The next dual meet for both teams will be Tuesday at home against Lawrence Central.
