The New Palestine boys soccer team rallied from an early deficit Tuesday to beat host Greenwood 2-1. Elliott Canova scored both goals for the Dragons in the second half. The equalizer came in the 57th minute. After a foul at midfield, Drew Potter played a 40-yard free kick into the box, where Canova headed it home to tie the game. In the 77th minute, Cole Christopher won a ball off a goal kick and played it through to Canova in front for a finish and the eventual winning goal. The Dragons nearly had the equalizer in the 50th minute, when Canova's shot from the left side of the box hit the underside of the crossbar, bounced down and out. Greenwood also hit the crossbar with the game tied 1-1 in the 74th minute. Shortly after Canova's winner, Greenwood brought the ball down the left side for a dangerous chance that was stopped by NP goalkeeper Jake Wells. Off the ensuing corner, a cross to the middle was headed toward Wells, who smothered it. The Dragons were then able to maintain possession and see out the final minutes. The Dragons thought they had a lead in the 14th minute, when play continued after a handball in the box by Greenwood, which was followed by an apparent goal. But the referee whistled the play dead and then awarded the Dragons a penalty kick, which was stopped. Greenwood then took the lead on a counterattack in the 32nd minute and carried that lead into halftime. The Dragons also won the JV game 2-0 on goals by Will Bardonner and Wes Harbert. The Dragons improved to 6-5 with the victory. They next play Thursday at Greenfield-Central.
