Softball slams four homers in Opening Day win

The New Palestine softball team hit four homers - two by Saydie Miller - in a dominant 20-0 five-inning win Thursday at Triton Central. Miller hit two homers, a double and drove in five runs in a 4-for-5 day. Cara Steele and Lyndsay Goodin also homered for the Dragons. Sadey Hughbanks and Cailyn Hurst combined on a one-hit shutout. Hughbanks struck out four in three perfect innings to earn the win. Hurst fanned five in two innings of relief. The Dragons had 15 hits - 11 coming from the top five batters in the starting lineup. Leadoff hitter Payton Dye was 1-for-1 with a double and an RBI, but she also walked four times and scored four runs. Amber Hurt was 1-for-1 with a double, a run and an RBI. Claire Fitzgerald was 3-for-5 with a double, a run and three RBI. Kenna Tweedy was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs. Steele was 2-for-4 with a homer, a double, two runs and three RBI. Goodin was 1-for-4 with a solo homer. Morgan Hutchinson was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Callie Cromwell scored twice and Tessa Mohr tallied three runs. Ten of the Dragons' 15 hits were for extra bases, including six doubles. The Dragons pounced for nine runs in the first, with Hurt delivering an RBI double, Fitzgerald a run-scoring single, Steele a two-run double, Dye a run-scoring double and Miller a two-run homer. They added six in the second, including a two-run double by Miller and RBI hits from Hutchinson and Fitzgerald. An error brought home a run in the third. Miller led off the fourth with a solo homer for her second of the game. In the fifth, Steele and Goodin both hit solo homers. Fitzgerald later added her third RBI hit of the game. The Class 3A No. 1 Dragons (1-0) are next in action Friday at Alexandria.
