The New Palestine boys wrestling team had three state placers Saturday at the IHSAA State Finals at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. At 150 pounds, Gunner Butt finished third, marking the fourth time he has placed at the State Finals. He began Saturday with a 12-4 major-decision victory over Cowan's Ashton Gorney. Butt then dropped a 10-1 decision to Brownsburg's Thomas Gibbs in the semifinal. In the third-place match, he recorded a takedown at the buzzer to beat Adams Central's Dylan Ogg 6-4 and claim third place. Butt finishes his senior season with a 36-2 record. At 285, William Glesing also placed third. He recorded an emphatic 19-3 tech fall over Terre Haute North's Griffin Osburn in the quarterfinals. In the semis, he was pinned by Lowell's Kameron Hazelett in 1:58. He faced Warren Central's Jacari Markey for the fourth consecutive week in the third-place match. Glesing recorded a second-period takedown to take the lead, and kept the third period at neutral to finish off a 3-2 victory. Glesing finishes the year 35-1. At 215, Colin Whetsel finished sixth. He began the day with a 17-2 loss to Crown Point's Ceasar Salas. He then beat Princeton's Jaran Kerney 11-3 with a major decision in the consolation semifinals. He dropped a 7-6 decision to Columbus East's Clayton Miller in the fifth-place match, recording a reversal and a takedown in a furious third-period comeback attempt that fell just short. Whetsel finished his senior season 28-4. The Dragons scored 38.5 points, placing them 11th in the state. Center Grove won the state title, with Brownsburg the runner-up.
