The New Palestine girls basketball team finished its conference schedule Thursday with a 54-49 road win over Yorktown. The victory gave the Dragons a 13-8 record and a 4-3 mark in HHC play, clinching at least third place in the league. Sadey Hughbanks tallied 16 points to lead the Dragons, while Brooklyn Crim scored 12. The Dragons had strong balance in the first quarter. Hughbanks opened the game with a 3-pointer and a conventional three-point play. Sawyor Murdick finished the frame with a 3-pointer and was one of five Dragons who scored, giving NP a 15-14 lead after one, despite Yorktown's Olivia Conklin scoring 12 points. The Dragons extended the lead to 27-24 at the break. Haven Flagle opened the frame with a basket, and then she and Murdick hit back-to-back triples, but Yorktown maintained contact. In the third, the Dragons started with a six-point run, with Crim hitting a basket and two free throws, followed by a Hughbanks score. Crim then drilled a 3-pointer. She had seven points in the frame, Hughbanks had five, capping the quarter with a three-point play to put NP up 41-33. In the fourth, the Dragons got early baskets from Hughbanks and Crim, and then found themselves on the line often. NP hit 7-of-14 from the stripe in the final frame to hold off a Yorktown charge led by Conklin, who hit two of the Tigers' 3-pointers in the frame. In addition to the two double-figure scorers, Flagle tallied nine points. Murdick and Gabbie Brown scored six each and Kendra Moore five. The Dragons won the JV game 46-20. The Dragons finish the regular season Friday at home against Eastern Hancock, which will be the Dragons' Senior Night.
