The New Palestine boys soccer team rallied from two deficits Tuesday to beat Mt. Vernon 3-2 in overtime. In the eighth minute of the 14-minute overtime, the Dragons broke through when Cohen Wintin ran onto the ball on the left side and was able to win it away from the Marauder goalkeeper along the end line. With the keeper off his line, Wintin fed the ball to Andon Colclazier, who blasted it into the net to give the Dragons the lead. The Dragons were able to see out the last six minutes, preserving the lead when Jake Wells made a leaping save on a shot labeled for the top near-post corner with just over a minute to go. The Dragons nearly took the lead at the end of the first seven-minute OT, as Colclazier sent a free kick to the far side, which Elliott Canova sent back into the middle for Cole Christopher, who volleyed the ball just over the crossbar. In regulation, the Dragons fell behind 1-0 in the second minute. Wells made a diving save in the 18th minute to keep the lead at one, allowing the Dragons to tie the game minutes later. Drew Potter served a free kick that bounded into the box and found Paxton Holmes, who headed it in to tie the game in the 22nd minute. The tie was short-lived, as MV scored in the 25th minute to re-take the lead. In the second half, the two teams played largely defensively with few chances until the 67th minute, when Wintin fed Holmes at the top of the box. Holmes ripped a shot from the 18-yard stripe into the upper corner of the net to tie the game at 2-2 and send it to extra time. The Dragons improved to 3-3 on the season with the victory and 2-0 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play. The JV game was played to a 0-0 draw. The Dragons are next in action Thursday at home against Franklin Central.
