Wagner-Gilbert places fifth in state

New Palestine junior June Wagner-Gilbert finished fifth at the IHSAA girls wrestling State Finals at 135 pounds, going 3-1 on the day. Wagner-Gilbert finishes her junior season with a 36-4 record and both sectional and regional championships, as well as a State Finals medal. She began the day with a 9-0 major decision victory over Sheridan's Devyn Pewarski. She then got a tough draw in the quarterfinals, facing eventual state champion Naima Ghaffar of NorthWood. Wagner-Gilbert lost by fall in 3:00. In the consolation semifinals, Wagner-Gilbert dominated quickly and pinned Southridge's Mya Menke in 3:39. In the fifth-place match, she won a 6-1 decision over Ja'Layia Williams of Kokomo to finish the season. She was one of two Dragons to compete at the State Finals. Senior Reagan Fortier lost by fall to Crown Point's Jayda Miller in 3:55 in the opening round at 170. Fortier finished her season 23-14. With 11 team points, the Dragons tied for 52nd in the state. Whiteland won the title, with Crown Point finishing second.
