Girls basketball rallies to win Covenant tourney

The New Palestine girls basketball team used a second-half rally to beat Covenant Christian 39-35 Saturday in the championship game of the Covenant Winter Shootout. The Dragons trailed 22-11 at halftime, but began to cut into the deficit in the third. Haven Flagle scored five points and Sadey Hughbanks four, as the Dragons scored 15 in the frame and cut the deficit to 29-26. In the fourth, Hughbanks and Flagle both hit 3-pointers. Hughbanks scored six points in the frame, Flagle tallied five, as the Dragons rallied to take a late lead. NP trailed 8-3 after a quarter and then was outscored 14-8 in the second. Hughbanks led the Dragons with 11 points. Flagle tallied 10. Brooklyn Crim scored five. Allyson White had four points. Sawyor Murdick, Kendra Moore and Gabbie Brown tallied three each. In the first game, the Dragons took command in the third quarter Saturday afternoon, beating Guerin Catholic 46-39 to win the opening game of the Covenant Christian Winter Shootout. The Dragons started strong inside, as Hughbanks tallied seven first-quarter points and Crim added a pair of baskets as the teams were even at 11-11 after one. The Dragons took a slim 21-19 halftime lead, with Hughbanks hitting a second-quarter 3-pointer and Gabbie Brown tallying three points. The Dragons extended their lead in the third, holding Guerin to five points and building a 32-24 edge. Murdick and Moore each hit 3-pointers and Crim tallied five points, including a three-point play. A 7-for-10 effort from the line in the fourth helped the Dragons put the game away. Moore hit an early 3-pointer and scored five points in the frame. Hughbanks also scored five in the quarter. Hughbanks led the Dragons with 15 points. Crim tallied 11. Moore scored eight points. Flagle and Brown each scored four. Murdick tallied three. The Dragons are now 12-3 on the season. They next play Thursday at Bloomington North.
