Glesing wins title at Mater Dei

William Glesing won the heavyweight title, leading four Dragons placers at Tuesday's Evansville Mater Dei Holiday Classic. Glesing went 4-0 on the day, with three falls and a major decision. He led a Dragons contingent that finished eighth in the 20-team field. Gunner Butt finished second at 150. Gabe Flick (175) and Isaiah Jones (190) each finished fifth. Glesing, now 13-0 on the season, opened the tourney with a 15-3 major decision over Tell City's Angus Machen. He then pinned Gibson Southern's Brody Klem, Avon's Branden Love and New Albany's Elijah Stokes, needing 2:47 to win by fall in the championship match. Butt finished second in his bracket. He beat Louisville St. Xavier's Zaid Chariska by a tech fall, then pinned New Albany's William McLaughlin and Columbus North's Cohen Long to get to the title match. Facing a fellow unbeaten, he lost by fall to Union County's Jordyn Raney at the end of the first period. Butt is now 17-1 on the year. Flick went 3-2 on the tourney, using a fall and a decision to get to the semifinal, where he lost two decisions in the semis and wrestlebacks. He then pinned Columbus North's Eric Streeval in 4:27 in the fifth-place match. Flick is now 10-4 on the year. At 190, Jones fought through the wrestlebacks to get to fifth. He went 4-2 on the tourney. After winning his first match, he lost to one of the state's top wrestlers - Indian Creek's Elijah Guyer - in the quarterfinals. Jones then posted two straight wins in the wrestlebacks to get to the consolation semifinal, where he dropped a 10-8 decision. He then beat Eastin Hall of Mt. Vernon (Posey) 5-4 in the fifth-place match. Jones is now 17-3 on the year. The Dragons brought 10 wrestlers to Evansville. Sebastian Stilts, Blake Doss, Wes Harbert, King Tavorn, Braeden Lintner and Ryker Yonts all competed, but did not place. The Dragons are back in action Jan. 8 at Franklin Central.
