The New Palestine boys soccer team controlled possession for much of the evening, but conceded a late free kick goal in a 2-1 home loss to Whiteland. The Dragons moved to 2-2 on the season. The first half was largely defensive, with the Dragons creating a pair of dangerous chances off free kicks. Drew Potter's service found Cohen Wintin for a header from six yards out that went just wide in the ninth minute. In the 28th minute, Andon Colclazier's free kick to the far post just eluded Danny Davis' run. Whiteland scored in the 36th minute out of the run of play to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Cole Christopher and Elliott Canova combined on a pair of early chances in the second half - with Whiteland's keeper smothering a ball played in to Christopher in the 46th minute and Canova missing just high on an attempt to chip the keeper two minutes later. Christopher then fed Mark Everett for a one-touch shot that just missed a minute later. In the 54th minute, the Dragons put the ball in behind the keeper, but it was swept off the goal line by a Whiteland defender. The Dragons got the equalizer in the 60th minute, as Canova was taken down making a move in the box. He buried the ensuing penalty kick. Off the ensuing kickoff, Canova was in alone again, but Whiteland's keeper made the save. Whiteland answered with a goal off a free kick in the 71st minute to re-take the lead. The Dragons had a handful of chances in the closing minutes - Eli Martin grazed the crossbar with a shot from the 18, Cohen Wintin was sent in alone but missed just wide on one attempt and was smothered on another. The Dragons are next in action Thursday at home against Franklin Central, with a 5:30 p.m. scheduled JV kickoff, followed by a 7 p.m. varsity kick.
