The New Palestine girls basketball team used a strong defensive second quarter and a big offensive third quarter to beat Rushville 50-30 Tuesday at Rushville's Memorial Gym. Sadey Hughbanks scored 18 points and Haven Flagle 12 to lead the Dragons. The Dragons took the lead in a close first quarter when Kendra Moore and Flagle hit back-to-back 3-pointers. Moore hit two triples in the opening frame. Hughbanks hit a late basket to put the Dragons up 13-9 after a quarter. In the second quarter, the Dragons held Rushville without a field goal. Flagle hit two shots and Gabbie Brown a 3-pointer, leading the Dragons to take a 22-13 halftime edge. In the third, the Dragons turned up the offense - especially Hughbanks. After Crim scored the first four points of the frame, Hughbanks hit a basket, then followed with a 3-pointer. Flagle added another triple, and Hughbanks a three-point play. Hughbanks finished the quarter with 12 of the Dragons' 21 points, as they built a 43-25 lead. Hughbanks added four more fourth-quarter points to help the Dragons put the game away. In addition to the two double-figure scorers, Moore and Crim scored six points each. Brown tallied four points. Sawyor Murdick and Ally White each scored two. The Dragons are now 6-1 on the season. They next play Saturday at Whiteland.
