Volleyball goes 2-1 at Southport

The New Palestine volleyball team went 2-1 at Saturday's Southport Invitational, finishing third in the six-team tournament. The Dragons won their opening match in three sets against Scecina, winning 26-24, 21-25, 15-7. Bella Brownfield had four aces, eight digs and seven kills. Natalie Sevier had eight kills, while Nyla Lewis and Hayden Ramsey tallied five kills each. Azure Flagle had 19 digs, Makaeli Johnson eight digs and two aces and Sam Gooding five digs and 24 assists. In the second match, the Dragons dropped a close 25-23, 26-24 decision to defending 1A state champion Fort Wayne Blackhawk. Flagle had 10 digs and Kyndra Monteith five. Gooding added five digs and 18 assists. Ramsey tallied seven kills and Rachel Burke six. In the third-place match, the Dragons beat East Central 25-18, 25-12. Burke and Ramsey tallied six kills and a block each. Lewis had four kills. Gooding added 17 assists, one ace and three digs. The Dragons (5-1) are next in action Tuesday at home against Greenwood Christian. The JV match commences at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity.
