The New Palestine boys soccer team scored two quick first-half goals and never looked back Thursday, pulling away to a 5-1 victory at Yorktown. The victory gave the Dragons a 2-0 record overall and 1-0 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play. The Dragons scored twice in the opening 11 minutes. In the ninth minute, Elliott Canova won a penalty kick as he was tripped up on a one-on-one move in the box. He buried the penalty to put the Dragons on the board. In the 10th minute, the Dragons doubled the lead when Cohen Wintin brought the ball up the right side and crossed it to Cole Christopher, who drove a one-touch shot into the back of the net. Yorktown quickly answered with a goal in the 11th minute, but the Dragons continued to put on pressure and restored the two-goal lead in the 16th minute, as Andon Colclazier drew a foul 25 yards out. Canova scored on another free kick for his fourth goal of the season and second of the game - all coming from set pieces. The Dragons continued to threaten - with Colclazier hitting the goalpost on a header headed into halftime. The Dragons went down to 10 men due to a player receiving a second yellow early in the second half, but still extended the lead. Wintin scored with a far-post shot from 15 yards out on a counterattack in the 48th minute to give the Dragons a 4-1 edge. After a lightning delay, the Dragons added to their lead when Colclazier buried a far-post shot in the 63rd minute. Jake Wells had a strong game in goal for the Dragons. The Dragons also won the JV game 3-0. The Dragons are next in action Saturday at Brownsburg, with a 10 a.m. JV kickoff and an 11:30 a.m. varsity kick.
