Defensive effort carries girls basketball to road victory

The New Palestine girls basketball team pulled away in the third quarter and held host Indian Creek to 15 second-half points Saturday en route to a 53-36 victory over the Braves. Sadey Hughbanks scored 17 points and Haven Flagle 13 to lead the Dragons, who improved to 4-0 with the victory. Hughbanks scored eight first-quarter points to help the Dragons build a 15-13 lead, as the quarter was bookended by 3-pointers from Gabbie Brown and Kendra Moore. In the second, Flagle hit two 3-pointers and the Dragons outscored IC 14-8 to build a 29-21 halftime edge. Hughbanks and Sawyor Murdick each tallied three points in the third, as the Dragons again extended their lead to 41-29. In the fourth, Flagle opened the frame with a 3-pointer and five straight points to balloon the lead. Hughbanks added four free throws. The Dragons were 7-of-8 from the line in the frame and 13-of-16 for the game. In addition to the two double-figure scorers, Brown tallied seven points. Moore and Murdick each scored five points. Brooklyn Crim scored three, Ally White two and Kenna Tweedy one. The Dragons next play Tuesday at home against Franklin Central.
