The New Palestine boys soccer team opened its season Tuesday with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Mooresville at Kelso Stadium. The Dragons had a few early threats, but finally broke through in the 27th minute when Paxton Holmes drew a foul from 25 yards out. Elliott Canova then blasted the ensuing free kick through the wall and off the goalkeeper's hand into the net to put the Dragons on the board. In the 35th minute, Andon Colclazier forced a turnover and then slotted the ball into the far-post netting from the 18-yard stripe to extend the lead. The Dragons then made it a 3-0 game in the 38th minute, when Holmes again drew a foul straight away at the top of the box. Canova buried the free kick into the upper right corner of the net to give the Dragons a 3-0 lead. In the second half, Holmes, Eli Martin and Cole Christopher all had solid chances, forcing saves by Mooresville's goalkeeper. The Dragons then extended the lead in the 72nd minute when Colclazier rattled a shot into the top left corner of the net. Jake Wells had the clean sheet in goal. His best save came in the 67th minute, when he made a diving stop on a redirection in front. The Dragons are now 1-0 on the season. They next play Thursday at Yorktown. The Dragons won the JV match 5-0 on goals from Kellen Baughn, Jude Hinkle, Will Worth, Mekhi McFarland and Joey Hicks.
