Volleyball wins season opener

The New Palestine volleyball team posted a three-set sweep over Scecina in Saturday's season opener, beating the Crusaders 25-17, 25-12, 25-19. Josie Corbett led the Dragons offensively with 12 kills. Natalie Sevier added nine kills, five digs, seven blocks and two aces. Rachel Burke also had nine kills. Setter Sam Gooding had 36 assists. Azure Flagle led the defense with 18 digs and three aces. Bella Brownfield had 13 digs, four kills and three aces. Kyndra Monteith and Makaeli Johnson each had six digs. Monteith also had an ace. "We are very excited for this season," Dragons coach Kelli Gabehart said. "Our team has many versatile players and we will be able to spread the ball around. Our passing looked great today led by Flagle and Monteith. We learned that we need to be improve at finishing each set and that will be a priority moving forward." The Dragons also won the JV match 25-19, 25-14. The freshman team also won in two sets. The Dragons are back in action Monday at Connersville.
