The fourth-ranked New Palestine softball team blanked No. 1 Roncalli 4-0 Saturday in a matchup of top-five teams.
The victory moved the Dragons’ record to 17-0 – the best start in the program’s history – and marked their third victory over a ranked opponent in a four-day span.
Sam Booe pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits and striking out 10. Roncalli threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but Booe initiated a flyout to right to end the game and seal the victory.
The Dragons took a quick 2-0 lead when Kinsey Mitchell reached on a dropped third strike and Alaina Miller followed with a single. Aglaia Rudd singled to left. Both Mitchell and Miller scored on an error on the play.
The Dragons maintained the lead as Booe faced two batters more than the minimum in the first six innings – a single in the third and a hit batter in the fifth – with no Royals moving past first base. Roncalli also had a single in the first inning but Rudd threw the runner out trying to steal.
In the sixth, the Dragons added two more runs when Rudd reached on an error. Lexi Campbell followed with a single, on which courtesy runner Courtney Study scored after an error. Another error and a bunt single by Kendal Calvert loaded the bases with none out. Vivian Long’s RBI groundout plated one run, but a forceout at home and a groundout ended the threat.
The Dragons had four hits – all singles, and all of which factored into the four Dragon runs. Roncalli also had four hits.
The Dragons are next in action at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Franklin.
