The New Palestine baseball team scored 15 runs in its first two at-bats Friday en route to a 16-4 victory over visiting Knightstown.
The victory moved the Dragons to 2-1 ahead of Saturday’s contest against Batesville.
The Dragons’ nine hits included seven extra-base hits, including a grand slam by Kaiden Kirkwood and a two-run homer by Brendan Tabor. Tabor and Maddox Manes also doubled. Nolan Cox, Blaine Nunnally and Carter Stogsdill all hit triples. Zayden Stiller and Tate Hackler also had hits for the Dragons.
Stogsdill opened the game with a leadoff triple and scored on a passed ball. After a walk to Luke Legault, Tabor homered to give NP a three-run lead three batters into the game. Caleb Davis reached on an error and scored on Cox’s triple. After a walk to Kirkwood, Cox then scored on the front half of a double steal. Nunnally followed with a run-scoring triple and then scored on a passed ball.
NP added eight more runs in the second on one hit – a grand slam by Kirkwood. The slam was preceded by five consecutive walks and followed by another walk, a hit batter, an errant pickoff plating one run and a sacrifice fly by Legault scoring another.
Hackler added an RBI single in the fourth to extend the Dragons’ lead.
Wes Stiller got the win on the mound for the Dragons, allowing two earned runs and three hits in three innings. He fanned seven. Eli Bruns finished the game with two innings of shutout relief, allowing one hit and fanning two.
