The New Palestine boys basketball team dropped its sectional opener Wednesday 72-59 to Greenfield-Central.
The Dragons took an early lead in the game at Richmond’s Tiernan Center, but fell behind 29-18 at halftime and trailed 37-21 early in the third before a 16-2 run drew NP’s deficit to 39-37 on Steele Brasfield’s 3-pointer. G-C answered with a basket, which Brasfield followed to again cut the deficit to two. But the Cougars extended the lead early in the fourth quarter and put the game away at the line.
Brasfield led the Dragons with 15 points. Matthew Brown added nine. Blaine Nunnally and Kyle Bastian scored eight points each. C.J. Oliver and Ian Stephens tallied seven each. Eli Stephens scored five.
The Dragons finish with a 14-9 record, the program’s fourth consecutive winning season. Eli Stephens, Oliver, Bastian and Brown will graduate with two sectional championships and a conference championship during their time in the program.
